Remember “Storytellers” on VH1? Artists would spend an hour-ish giving us the scoop on some of their (and our) favorite songs and then perform them in front of an audience, which was a boon for us music geeks. Many, many phenomenal artists partook of the show over its 98 episode run–Sting, Mary J. Blige, David Bowie, the Pretenders, and Kanye West, to name a few.
One episode I recall fondly–I still have the VHS recording directly from my t.v.–featured Melissa Etheridge performing a version of one of her first singles, “Bring Me Some Water” from her self-titled debut album. This was already a great moment. But then she had to bring up Joan Osborne to join her. Friends, between Osborne’s soulful belt and Etheridge’s gravelly rock howl, I was a nerdy puddle on the floor. A link to this particular part of the episode, which originally aired on September 13, 1996, is below. Turn it up. And then find somebody to bring you some water…you’ll need it.
