On July 6, 1984, five wickedly talented kids from Boston called New Edition released their second, self-titled album. You probably still know those kids by name: Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe. Each would go on to enjoy success after and between New Edition. (The latter three, of course, would form Bel Biv DeVoe.) The group would break up, reunite, breakup, and reunite again. (Both reunions resulted in albums that would reach number 1 and 12, respectively, on the charts.) Johnny Gill, another solo success, would join the group in 1987.
Though they’ve had some tumultuous times, they’ve always produced great music and solid hits. The original crew (with Gill) continue to work today, and we’re thankful they said “cool it now” to all the fighting and got back to what they do best. Here’s the first single from that self-titled album released thirty-three years ago today.
