I remember the day my brother came home with Duran Duran‘s Rio LP (my brother got a record player complete with cassette and 8-track player for his 8th grade graduation.) A comic book geek from birth, the maroon Patrick Nagel print on the cover was easily the coolest thing I’d seen.
Much to my parents’ delight, we played the album over and over and over. And it was this, the last song on the album, that brings back the strongest memories for me. It wasn’t a single the band released, but it was a great track (on one of the best albums of the 80s) and for me, it signaled the close to a listening experience that has become a standard for me when discovering new albums. (It also meant I had to get off the couch and flip the record over to start it again.)
Enjoy this deep cut from Duran Duran’s masterpiece Rio, “The Chaffeur.”
